Real wood blinds warp in humid rooms because wood never stops being wood: it's hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases water vapour from the air constantly, and it swells and shrinks as it does — unevenly. A slat that takes on more moisture on one face than the other bows toward the drier side; do that through a few hundred coastal BC humidity cycles and you get the cupped, twisted slats every Vancouver-area homeowner has seen. This isn't a defect or a quality problem — it's the material behaving exactly as trees do. Here's the actual science, why finishes only slow it down, and how to decide where real wood is safe and where faux wood is simply the correct answer.

The science: wood is a bundle of straws

A wood slat is essentially a bundle of long cellulose straws (the grain) glued together with lignin. Two properties of that structure cause every warped blind:

Why slats cup, bow, and twist differently

The failure shapes are the grain patterns talking. Cupping (edges curling up) comes from face-to-face moisture imbalance — the classic bathroom pattern. Bowing along the slat's length shows up in long slats on wide windows, where gravity teams up with softened fibres; a moisture-heavy slat is also measurably heavier and less stiff. Twisting betrays wandering grain — a slat cut where the tree's fibres spiralled will corkscrew as moisture cycles, which is why two slats from the same blind can behave completely differently. Once fibres have crept into a new shape under load (the technical term is creep-set), drying the room out doesn't straighten them. Warp is a one-way street.

Don't finishes seal the wood?

They slow the exchange; they don't stop it. Paint, stain, and lacquer are vapour retarders, not vapour barriers — water molecules pass through microscopically, just more slowly, and every routed cord hole, cut end, and micro-crack in the finish is an express lane. A sealed slat in a humid room reaches the same destination as a raw one; it just takes a few extra months of cycling. This is why 'moisture-resistant coatings' on real wood buy time rather than immunity — an honest distinction the sales brochures tend to blur.

The coastal BC multiplier

Our climate is close to a laboratory test for wood movement: months of 70–90% outdoor humidity, single-glazed and even double-glazed windows running condensation all winter, and then heated interiors that crash indoor humidity — so the wood doesn't just get damp, it cycles, and cycling is what does the damage. The window itself is the harshest microclimate in the house: a blind hangs centimetres from the coldest, wettest surface in the room. Kitchens add steam spikes; bathrooms are the worst case; and basement suites combine ground moisture with cool air. Where real wood is genuinely fine — and where it never is

Real wood blinds remain a beautiful product in the right room: living rooms, dining rooms, offices and bedrooms in conditioned homes with decent windows — dry, stable spaces where wood's warmth and lighter weight (real wood is noticeably lighter than faux wood, which matters on very wide blinds) earn their premium. Where the science says simply no: bathrooms, kitchens (anywhere near sink or stove), laundry rooms, basement suites, uninsulated sunrooms, and any window that runs winter condensation. In those rooms the question isn't whether a real wood blind will move — it's when.

Why faux wood doesn't care

Faux wood blinds are PVC/composite: no cellulose, no straws, nothing hygroscopic. The slats don't exchange moisture with the air at all, so the entire mechanism above simply doesn't apply — no cupping over the bathtub, no twisting through the winter, and a surface that wipes clean of condensation without a thought. The honest trade-offs run the other way: faux wood is heavier (relevant on very wide windows — sometimes we'll split one span into two blinds), and its printed grain, while good these days, is a reproduction rather than the tree. For every humid room in a BC home, that trade is a bargain — which is why faux wood is our bathroom-and-kitchen answer, full stop, and why we'll say so plainly even when the real-wood order would cost more.

Already have warped slats?
