Both window film and solar shades cut heat — the difference is that film is a permanent modification to your glass while a solar shade is an adjustable layer in front of it. Film works every hour of every day whether you want it to or not, dims your rooms in December as faithfully as it cools them in July, and on some sealed units can put the window's own warranty at risk. A solar shade does its heat-blocking when you deploy it, disappears when you want your light and view back, and never touches the glass. How each one actually blocks heat

Window film is a micro-thin layer applied directly to the glass — tinted, reflective, or spectrally selective — that rejects a portion of solar energy before it enters the room. Once applied, it's part of the window: working during heat waves, cloudy weeks, and midwinter alike.

Solar shades are screen-fabric roller shades. The weave — the 'openness factor', from a tight 1% to an airy 14% — intercepts solar energy at the window while preserving the view through. A 3% shade blocks most solar gain and glare while you still see the mountains; a 10% weave trades some heat rejection for a brighter room and clearer view. Crucially, the whole thing rolls up: full sun, full light, full view on demand.
